The expanding artistic bestiary has this time turned to the 19th-century whaling industry
with a sculptural work titled Victory Lap. Depicting a massive whale rising up through a
whaleboat splintered in two, the bronze sculpture was inspired by the 1840 “Broken
Mast Monument” in Sag Harbor’s Oakland Cemetery – which commemorates numerous
ships that were crushed by the so-called “monsters of the deep.” The sculpture
celebrates how these proud creatures were occasionally able to fight back against their
human opponents…
